Chinese government may have funded gene-edited babies

The Chinese government may have funded research into creating the world's first gene-edited babies, it is claimed.

Documents seen by medical news site STAT suggest that Chinese scientist He Jiankui may have received money from three separate government institutions in China.

The documents, including a presentation prepared by Dr He's team, patient consent forms and China's clinical trial registry, showed that grants were issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission, which is part of the municipal government, and Southern University of Science and Technology, where Dr He had worked.

It is not clear, however, whether the institutions knew how their grants would be used, according to STAT. It is possible Dr He had used money that had been given to his lab for earlier research for the gene-editing study.
